Forbidden Friends Totally Low, Out Now

Forbidden Friends - Totally Low MP3/ 7” w/ Digital Download  $5

Forbidden Friends is the side-project of Hutch Harris from The Thermals. An almost-acoustic affair, the songs are at once modern and old-fashioned. The instrumentation is incredibly minimal - simple and effective. The lyrics are love stories sung from a hidden location - keep it underneath, in a place where only you and I know. Whoa-oh!

“Totally Low” is the second single from Forbidden Friends, recorded by Kendra Lynn at Jackpot! in Portland, Oregon. Harris performed all the basic instruments (drums, guitar, bass, voice) and percussion was supplied by his fellow Thermals Kathy Foster and Westin Glass. The title may sound negative, but in truth “Totally Low” is totally up. Not ‘low’ like ‘down’, but ‘low’ like ‘on the down low’ - keep it like a secret.

Forbidden Friends is a singles-only band! You know, like Creation. No full length records are planned - keep asking, though.

Salutations: Last Days of Oly Warehouse Sale

Dear KRS Mail Order Freaks,

As Charlotte said, “Salutations are greetings. It’s my fancy way of saying hello.”

But this is my non-fancy farewell.  The Olympia warehouse is closing on Friday.

Here’s what’s still available and on sale

buyolympia.com will no longer accept Kill Rock Stars orders after Friday. There will be a new shopping cart soon. Details will come in a future newsletter with a new link.

I will be here for another few weeks, doing inventory, shipping stock and moving out.

I wish I could think of some snappy Paul Lynde-esque way of saying goodbye…Templeton was always my favorite…but really there is no easy exit.

If you need to find me, I’m around. Stay punk. You know I will.

New Release: Milagres Glowing Mouth

Milagres - Glowing Mouth MP3/CD/LP w/ Digital Download

New York was wearing on Kyle Wilson, lead singer & songwriter for the Brooklyn-based quintet Milagres. So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. As so often happens in life, he got a little more space than he bargained for during a rock climbing trip he fell and ended up spending months bedridden with a back injury. Before he left New York, Wilson had thought he might leave the band behind entirely. But during the long days of his recovery he found himself writing songs again, and he realized he wanted to go back.

Upon his return to NYC, Wilson drafted Fraser McCulloch (bass, backing vocals, keys) into his new vision of Milagres, sharing with him the arrangements that he dreamt of while recovering from his injury. These demos were then refined with the addition of Eric Schwortz (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), Chris Brazee (piano/keys) and Steven Leventhal (drums, percussion), evolving into what would become the new group’s first LP, Glowing Mouth.

The musical scope of the album is big and due to the piano-based melodies and soaring falsettos, early press has compared the band to artists as diverse as Grizzly Bear and Prince, demonstrating the wide breadth of Milagres material. The first single, “Glowing Mouth”, is a slow-burner made for dancing close on a hot summer night, whereas “Here To Stay” has a keyboard hook that won’t let you sleep. Kyle Wilson has a knack for writing dreamy story songs that also pack a punch in both chorus and melody. Songs like “Gentle Beast” and “Gone” suck you in and then haunt you for days afterwards this is an album that stays with you.

Band of the Week: Born Against, Ends 9/14

Born Against (NYC/Richmond) was an incredibly good political punk band that was unafraid to point accusatory fingers in any direction, utterly unencumbered by such niceties as tact or relevance. Band members went on to be in tons of bands including Wrangler Brutes, Universal Order of Armageddon and Men’s Recovery Project.

Born Against  - The Rebel Sound of Shit and Failure CD/MP3

Born Against - 9 Patriotic Hymns for Children/ Battle Hymns of the Race War CD/MP3

Pre-Order Forbidden Friends Totally Low, Out 9/27

Forbidden Friends - Totally Low 7” w/ Digital Download  $5

Band of the Week: Numbers, Ends 9/7

This week’s band of the week are Numbers. They were once the premier party-rock dance outfit with whom we found our salvation from the curse that was the coming of a new century. Then came Numbers of a new dawning era of self realization and societal enlightenment. Previously three individuals taking turns of yelping, buzzerk-ing, pushing and shoving coming together occasionally to make fight music for pajama parties, now has become a singular sound; an epic, mind-driving sound.

To celebrate, both of their KRS CDs are on sale for $2.99

Listen to/download MP3 of “Beast Life” (from We’re Animals here.
Listen to/download MP3 of “Mind Hole” (from Now You Are This here.
